The World Cup 2010: Heaven on Earth? - John Van Sloten
July 11, 2010
|In two hours over 1 Billion people will sit down to watch the biggest single sporting event on the face of the earth. Why? What might God be saying through this beautiful game?
[The World Cup] symbolizes the power of football to bring people together from all over the world, regardless of language, the colour of one’s skin, political or religious persuasion.
Nelson Mandela, in a message to the FIFA congress, Johannesburg.
“What makes the World Cup most beautiful is the world, all of us together. The joy of being one of the billion or more people watching 32 countries abide by 17 rules fills me with the conviction, perhaps ignorant, but like many ignorant convictions, fiercely held, that soccer can unite us all.”
Sean Wilsey, National Geographic, June 2006
“I'm going to come and then gather everyone—all nations, all languages. They'll come and see my glory.”
God via the prophet Isaiah 66:18
“Then I looked and heard the voice of many angels, numbering thousands upon thousands, and ten thousand times ten thousand. They encircled the throne and...in a loud voice they sang: "Worthy is the Lamb, who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and strength and honor and glory and praise!" Then I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and on the sea, and all that is in them, singing: "To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be praise and honor and glory and power, for ever and ever!"
The apostle John re: Jesus in Revelation 5:11-13
“God gives gifts to everyone. Some can write, some can dance;
He gave me the skill to play football.”
