Media @ New Hope CalgaryWe finish our series on photography by focusing on the theme of Light. Our texts this morning will be photographer Galen Rowell and select bible passages.

“His photographic vision grew out of a unique mix of athletic abilities, technical skills, intellectual understanding, and artistic intuition, which enabled him to identify, chase, capture, and interpret those ephemeral moments when light and landscape interact in ways that transcend specific situations.”
F. Lanting, Galen Rowell: A Retrospective, page 252

“After six days Jesus took with him Peter, James and John the brother of James, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. There he was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and his clothes became as white as the light. Just then there appeared before them Moses and Elijah, talking with Jesus. Peter said to Jesus, "Lord, it is good for us to be here. If you wish, I will put up three shelters—one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah." While he was still speaking, a bright cloud enveloped them, and a voice from the cloud said, "This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased. Listen to him!"
Matthew 17:1-5, NIV

“His passion for the mountains, not his mountaineering skills, provided the real fuel for his photography. One could argue whether his firsthand, close up experience of them made for better landscapes at a distance, but there is no denying that at any range he could imbue them with the qualities of majesty and timelessness. Mountains in Rowell’s pictures, are the standards against which we might measure ourselves, the obdurate others of human existence.”
Andy Grunberg, Galen Rowell: A Retrospective, page 49

"I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life."
Jesus in John 8:12

I believe God game me my talent to bring people to Christ.. I am very similar to Rowell in my photography, I'm 19 and self-taught. I took up a camera one day and discovered I had "eyes" too.. if you have the chance please check out my work -- I dream to surpass Rowell -- artificialcolors.tumblr.com/

Just so you know, Galen's last name ...Rowell is pronounced like you would pronounce the word "owl" not "ole" Galen was my mentor and the reason I got into landscape photography. It was a very sad day when we lost him and his wife Barbara in that sudden plane crash.

Yes I know. I met him at a book signing for Mountainlight in Concord MA. many years ago. I purchased one of his lithographs and he autographed it for me. The most amazing thing I remember about Galen is that he was completely "self taught." He really understood his craft. His favorite saying was "photography is an action sport." He and his wife Barbara will be sorely missed....Ken

Great sermon. Something I have been contemplating recently; about listening to the small voice within you from God which at least is your conscience to guide you. I realized that for a long time that I all too often had not listened to it. I was doing all the talking to God our Father and not listening that much. Thanks!

It's a weird story isn't it. But if you take it literally, how would the men know Moses and Elijah? Were there formal introductions or did they have name tags? Why would Peter make such a bizzare offer? And why would God interrupt Peter to demand that he start listening to Jesus?

Something may have happened to inspire this story, but what was it really?
