this is a horrid video
The sound of this song does not create such a negative landscape this vid portrays. I wish peeps would stop believin this refers to death and destruction or wars, always a war in a dylan interpretation. And it has nothing to do with God. You ever hear Dylan reference him in the song or say Everythings broken, God's the glue? In fact the song offers no solution
But t each is own. Believe what ya will lads
Still a dope song
Neil Young - God's Prophet? June 30, 2009 Dear Pastor Van Sloten,
Hello. Someone sent me a link to this sermon of yours; I hope you don't
mind me responding with my misgivings.
Now I have nothing against Neil Young. He seems like a decent enough man,
though I don't know whether or not he believes in the Lord. And I also
firmly believe that God uses a wide variety of agents, human and non-, to
make people think about spiritual things or to give them a sense of
conviction. Neil Young could easily be among those agents.
But when we use the term "prophet," we have to use it very loosely in a
context where people are wont to think of _biblical_ prophets; we have to
qualify the term so that it's clear we're not literally intending it as an
equivalent to the biblical usage of the same term. Neil Young certainly
does _not_ fall into the category of the _biblical_ prophets. Indeed, the
very fact that a host of music stars put on a tribute concert for Young
should automatically tell us that he is not like the biblical prophets,
because today's celebrities would likely _stone_ the biblical men of God!
Today social consciousness is fashionable. In and of itself it's a good
thing - but it's not borne out of any new or increased love for God on the
part of celebrities, politicians, activists, and the droves who follow them.
It is borne out of a man-centred version of philanthropic sentiment. It is
a counterfeit of the Bible's 'agape'. In the context of the West today,
so-called "prophetic" statements like we see from Young, U2, or whomever,
are acceptable for the simple reason that they do not demand repentance, and
submission to the lordship of Christ. If that demand were appended, then
such "prophets" would be rejected wholesale by our society.
Yet that is the number one demand that would be made by a _biblical_
I once was given a pamphlet on angelology by Jehovah's Witnesses. I was
surprised and pleased to find there was nothing unbiblical about it, which
means the JWs, apparently, are able to put out some good teaching re.
angels. Does it follow that the writer of that pamphlet, because s/he
delivered some truth on this subject, is one of "God's prophets"? Hardly!
It means that deposits of truth can be found all over the place - including
Neil Young - without making the carriers of that truth "prophets."
I'd rather talk in more generalized terms like that, than to use a biblical
term like "prophet," to describe Young. The latter is to effectively dumb
down and disrespect the biblical version, as if the real prophets were no
more authoritative than one of today's rock stars.
I don't know much about your church or what you stand for, but in all
honesty what people need the most today is not familiarity with pop icons.
Rather, it is the undiluted word of God, for want of which they are in a
state of starvation. And that starvation is largely due to the fact that so
many shepherds have stopped proclaiming it.
“ 'Behold, the days are coming,' declares the Lord GOD, 'when I will send a
famine on the land—not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of
hearing the words of the LORD.” (Amos 8:11) "Disaster comes upon disaster;
rumor follows rumor. They seek a vision from the prophet, while the law
perishes from the priest and counsel from the elders." (Ezk. 7:26) "Where
there is no prophetic vision the people cast off restraint" (Prov. 29:18).
Sincerely in Christ,
Neil Young - God's Prophet? June 30, 2009 Ive been a born again Christian since '71 and along the way Neil's music has helped me through some of my hardest struggles. His music has always filled me with the Holy Spirit. I seek for answers through prayer and then I look for love. Neil's music always felt like it was speaking to my heart. When rednecks try to hold us down we have to stand tall and be counted. Shrug off the haters in this world. Let us rejoice and be glad in this day the Lord has made!
Coming Home - The God of Travel June 30, 2009 That's a post office. There is a number of heroine addicts in Dublin, it could have been one of them. It could have been anyone, even a tourist, or a refugee. Who knows?
